Mark 3:28–29(KJV 1900) — 28Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: 29But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:
I remember as a child hearing preachers give various meanings to this verse [and the others like it] as though there were some act a person could physically do which could prevent them from ever being saved.....I have heard them say that if you were ever under conviction and didn't come to the altar, you've forfeited your chance....can't be forgiven after that, you've blasphemed the Holy Spirit [when in fact they had only grieved the Holy Spirit]....they would say that trying to get people to come to an altar to pray. By the way, there is no scripture reference to an altar call.....that was invented by a man named DL Moody.....but that's another story for another day....the above rendering in Mark tells us all we need to know as to what this verse really means....when a person deliberately slanders the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit, he obviously cannot be saved in that state.....that person has wholly rejected the only basis of God's salvation sadly enough....in this state there is no hope for this person....but for the rest of us, imperfect human beings, when we sin, we ask forgiveness and pray the Lord to reestablish fellowship with us.....The Holy Ghost is with us eternally! We cannot blaspheme that which we know to be true! May the Lord bless your day!! Pastor Scott
